TARAgram Yatra 2012, "Sustainable Development in South Asia - Women Driving Change"

TARAGram Yatra 2012 took place in New Delhi and Orchha, India 21-25 November.  Lead by Development Alternatives (DA) group and supported by UNEP, APFED Showcase Programme and the South Asian Women’s Network (SWAN), the conference theme was, “Sustainable Development in South Asia – Women Driving Change”.

Through a mix of dialogues and field visits, the YATRA provided a platform for exchanging cutting-edge ideas on how to realise a sustainable future for the subregion through the empowerment of women. Among the topics discussed within the context of development were: Entrepreneurship and livelihood enhancement, leadership and political participation, regional priorities for scaling-up women’s inclusion in sustainable development goals and initiatives for capacity building of women in South Asia in the field of environmental issues. During field trips, participants saw expamples of low carbon pathways for green growth in rural India, including: Biogas enterprise, eco-housing, rainwater harvesting for water security and ICT for development.

The event provided leads for follow-up on policies and action at the local, national and international levels. It provided an excellent platform for the APFED Showcase Programme to introduce projects where women have played an integral role in their success, such as "Promoting the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) for Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Gokarneswor Village Development Committee (VDC) of Kathmandu Valley", "Setting up Model GREEN Colleges" and "Mentha [Mentha arvensis] Cultivation for Livelihood Enhancement and Biodiversity Conservation".
